Federal Court Blocks Trump’s Attempt to End TPS for Venezuelans, Protecting Thousands in New York

New York, NY—Today, a United States federal appeals court rejected the Trump administration’s request for a stay of a district court order blocking the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 350,000 Venezuelans, preventing thousands of New Yorkers from facing deportation and the loss of work authorization.

Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO, New York Immigration Coalition:

“Today, hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans who call America home attained some justice and a reprieve from the Trump administration’s attacks. Stripping our neighbors of their immigration status would have had devastating consequences for these families who have worked hard to integrate into their communities and support our economy. We are thankful to the courts for recognizing that the administration’s actions were not grounded in the law. However, this respite does not mean that immigrant New Yorkers are no longer under threat from an administration that is determined to pursue a mass deportation agenda. We call on New York State’s electeds to fully fund the Access to Representation Act to ensure immigrant New York families have the support they need to navigate a constantly evolving immigration system.”
