New York, NY—Today, the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) and the African Services Committee (ASC) rallied together to demand healthcare for Black immigrants in New York through the passage of the Coverage 4 All bill.

Leaders from both organizations spoke about the need to pass the legislation, and how the pandemic has exposed inequities in healthcare coverage especially for immigrant New Yorkers.

Albany, NY - Today, the New York State Senate Health committee voted to move bill S1572, also known as Coverage For All, forward to the Finance committee. The legislation passed with 7 yes votes to 6 no votes. With this move, both versions of the legislation have progressed out of each legislative houses’ Health committees.

New York, NY-Today, the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), and several community-based organizations held a media briefing focused on the impact of New York’s redistricting process on immigrant New Yorkers. The briefing came after the NYS legislature’s release of new congressional and state legislative districts.

Albany, NY – Today, the Assembly Health Committee passed the Coverage For All bill(A880) by 15 yes votes and ten no votes and sent the bill to the Codes committee. Coverage For All is legislation that would create a state-funded health coverage option for New Yorkers up to 200% of the federal poverty line regardless of immigration status.

This week marked the first anniversary of President Joseph R. Biden’s inauguration. President Biden unveiled an ambitious plan to transform the US immigration system during his first weeks in office. But one year later, virtually none of the Biden administration’s promises on immigration reform have come to fruition.

New York, NY–Today, Governor Kathy Hochul released her first Executive Budget. The budget includes a slight increase in funding for The Liberty Defense Project, which provides free legal assistance and representation to immigrants outside of New York City, and increased funding for the Office of New Americans—critical to keeping New York families together.

New York, NY—Today, several New York Republican officials, along with the New York Republican State Committee and the Republican National Committee, filed a legal challenge seeking to subvert the will of the New York City Council and stop more than 800,000 New Yorkers from voting in local municipal elections.

 Today, Mayor-elect Eric Adams announced the appointment of Manuel “Manny” Castro to the position of commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA). Castro’s appointment marks the first time the post of MOIA Commissioner will be held by a formerly undocumented person.

New York, NY—Today, the Senate Parliamentarian, an unelected bureaucrat, ruled that Congressional Democrats’ plan to provide temporary work permits without a roadmap to citizenship, does not meet the Senate requirements of reconciliation.
